Newmont's Sustainability Performance in 2023: Numbers Tell the Story

Newmont recently released their sustainability targets report, and the numbers show a strong commitment with areas for continued progress. Here's a quick snapshot:

Environment:

  • Water : 17% reduction in water consumption compared to 2022! This impressive achievement is driven by innovation at Boddington (increased recycling & reservoir use) and Peñasquito (production halt due to strike).

  • Climate Goals : While not meeting their 2023 climate targets, Newmont remains committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) across all scopes.

Social Responsibility:

  • Local Procurement : Surpassed the $1.2 billion target, spending $1.4 billion with local/indigenous suppliers! However, only 9 out of 11 operating sites met their individual spending targets.

  • Local Employment : 5 out of 11 operating sites achieved or exceeded their local/indigenous employment targets.

Safety:

  • Room for Improvement ⚠️: While Newmont strives for zero fatalities, there was one workplace death in 2023.

Transparency & Integrity

  • Integrity Helpline : Received 1,066 reports in 2023, with nearly half (45%) concerning misconduct. Almost half (49%) of escalated matters resulted in substantiated allegations.

Looking Ahead:

Newmont's commitment to sustainability is evident. While there's progress, there's also room for improvement, particularly in achieving climate goals and increasing local employment.
